Indian elephants are distinguished by their small ears (vs. the larger ones of the African elephant). Behind them are very soft spots, often called the knuckle, which trainers and riders steer with their feet. Some will live upwards of 70 years; all are protected by the Endangered Species Act due to the ivory trade and decreased natural habitats.
