Poison dart frogs, also called poison arrow frogs, are so named because of the use of their venom by Amerindian tribes. Though they tend to weigh less than an ounce, the most poisonous breed packs enough poison to kill up to 20,000 mice. Their remarkably vibrant colors are a natural warning sign to would-be predators but, due to deforestation, many species of poison dart frogs face a higher threat of extinction than they pose themselves.
