22 new libraries, one scene redesign, and a library of Matt's own.
In this video, Emmy®-winning sound artist Matt Yocum (Widow's Bay, Secret Level, The Last of Us) explores CORE 8, our latest flagship library bundle. He redesigns a scene using only CORE 8 sounds, tours the new libraries, and introduces a library of his own.
CORE 8 adds 22 new libraries, 111,000+ new sounds, and 27,000+ new files. That includes new collections from Oscar® winner Mark Mangini, Richard King, and Dave Whitehead, field recordings from Brazil's Atlantic Forest and the French countryside, and two new additions to the Game Audio Collection: Melee Weapons and Ambiences.
With over 1.3M world-class sound effects developed in exclusive collaboration with Oscar® winners like Mark Mangini (Dune) and Richard King (Oppenheimer), CORE 8 gives you the same inspiring sonic toolset used by industry professionals in film, TV, games, advertising, and beyond.
0:00 - CORE 8 overview
"Today we are going to be exploring the new CORE 8 collection," says Matt. "It brings us 22 new libraries. That is a huge new palette to work with, and just like all the other releases from Pro Sound Effects, you can count on the fact that there's amazing metadata, amazing character, and excellent variety to get you going on any level of project."
0:37 - Scene redesign
To put the new material to the test, Matt challenged himself to redesign a scene from a recent show using only sounds found in CORE 8.
"I tried to do a lot with rhythm and timing," he says. "There's lots of different textures, lots of synthetic elements. There's tonal elements, noisy elements, risers, explosions."
1:27 - Andy Aaron Collection: applause, laughter, and hot air balloons
Matt browses in Soundminer, but recommends SoundQ for anyone getting started. "It's totally free, and it has great direct integration with their libraries," he says.
First up is the Andy Aaron Collection, a new general library covering a wide range of categories. Matt auditions hot air balloons, which he says he's never come across in his libraries before, along with sparse applause and audience laughter.
"I actually can't tell you how useful applause is, especially sparse ones like this. They're great for being able to get in and out of larger audiences," says Matt. "Natural sounding audience laughter is actually very hard to come by."
2:32 - Brazilian Atlantic Forest: Vol. 1: rainforest ambiences
Next, Matt plays a selection of ambiences recorded on location in Brazil's Atlantic Forest. "I could absolutely see using these," he says.
2:56 - Electric Motorcycles
Then it's on to Electric Motorcycles. "That stuff's really fun," says Matt.
3:14 - Sirens, game audio, vehicles, and more
Matt runs through more of what's new, including:
-
Emergency Sirens
-
Game Audio Collection: Melee Weapons and Ambiences, optimized for game audio workflows
-
Gen Collection: Vol. 7, the latest general library from Pro Sound Effects
-
Immersive France, multichannel recordings from across France
-
King Collection: Vehicles Vol. 3, 4, and 5, plus King Collection: Vol. 5, by Richard King (Oppenheimer, Inception)
-
Mangini Collection: Vol. 1 and 2 by Mark Mangini (Dune, Blade Runner 2049)
"You can never have enough textures and variety of these sorts of everyday sounds," Matt says of Gen Collection: Vol. 7.
On the King and Mangini collections: "In this one new CORE update, you're gonna get three different general libraries from Oscar-winning sound artists. What more do I have to say about that?"
4:02 - Material Destruction: debris sound effects
"I finally fulfilled a dream of mine, which was to have my own library," says Matt. Material Destruction is his debris library, with lots of variety and multiple takes in each file, plus designed and processed sounds to work with.
"Just a whole new palette of debris sounds," he says.
4:42 - Sonic Legacy: Vol. 1: vintage sound effects
Sonic Legacy is a new collection of older recordings with a vintage character. "I'm seriously loving the sort of stuff that I'm finding in this library, and I think you'll enjoy it too," says Matt.
5:18 - Urban Elements Vol. 2: city ambiences
The second volume of Eric Norris's Urban Elements collection is one Matt already knows well. "I use volume one all the time. It's amazing for assembling specifics of backgrounds in any sort of urban landscape," he says. "It's got that natural reverb and distance on it. I don't need to fake anything with a close-up recording. This stuff is invaluable to me."
5:58 - Conclusion
"All of these libraries will provide you with brand new palettes, and therefore brand new inspiration for your projects," Matt concludes, "whether you're working on small indies all the way up through AAA games or Hollywood feature films."
