Gamers are a highly perceptive and often critical audience who notice the smallest details and aren’t afraid to be vocal about their expectations — and sound is no exception.
When a game gets it right, the community raves about it. A quick YouTube search turns up videos like The Ten Most Satisfying Sound Effects in Video Games and Why Indie Games Always Seem to Have the Best Sound Design alongside relaxing Skyrim ambiences and ‘cozy’ Minecraft playthroughs for sleep and studying. Forums like Reddit are full of threads praising the immersive use of sound in games like Silent Hill, Alan Wake 2, and Subnautica, while outlets like Kotaku and IGN regularly mention effective sound design in reviews.
But when a game’s sound doesn’t hit the mark, gamers are quick to point out the flaws. Back in 2020, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla was panned for its overly compressed and low-quality audio. Hardcore competitive FPS players have critiqued games like Valorant and Battlefield RedSec for not having detailed enough positional audio cues such as footsteps. In the modding scene, devoted fans of games like Fallout 4, Skyrim, and Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries have gone to great lengths to create complete audio overhauls to improve the experience.
Especially in today’s industry, where micro-budget indie projects can become overnight sensations while highly anticipated triple-A titles bomb, the thought put into making a high-quality experience is far more important than the resources or technology that went into it. With popular titles often selling for $70-80 on release, gamers expect top-notch entertainment for their money, and sound is a huge part of that. So, what makes a game sound great, and how can you use sound to its full potential in your next project?

In Game Audio in 2025: Challenges, Changes & Opportunities, Ville Sorsa of Remedy Entertainment summed up the value proposition of audio in games by highlighting three main factors. “There's the immersion side of things, guidance, and the general feel,” said Sorsa, adding that sound can be “used as a tool to elevate the psychological and emotional experience to a higher level.” Building on that concept, we’re diving deeper into the ways that sound affects gameplay by providing guidance to the player, making the experience feel rewarding, and creating a sense of immersion.
The most important factor in any game is playability, and sound often plays a key role in giving the player the cues they need to succeed. Any sound that directly affects gameplay (you know, like the mushroom sound in Super Mario Bros. or the twinkling of a nearby Nirnroot in Skyrim) should be your first priority. To test the impact of sound on playability, try playing a test build with the volume off and make a note of which sonic cues impact core mechanics. Then, make sure those key sound effects can be heard clearly at all times.
Just like the way your car beeps when you unlock it or Slack plays a sound when you get a message, sound effects provide valuable feedback in games. Whether it’s a short blip when the player collects coins or points, a throbbing heartbeat when they’re low on health, or a confirmation sound when they save the game, all game-critical events should be associated with a recognizable sound effect so the player can focus on their inputs instead of juggling information.
Sound also plays a critical role in making your game accessible. If someone can’t see or process all the information on screen, sound effects can help communicate key events, status changes, objective progress, and even mundane things like menu navigation. In most cases, these sounds should take precedence over music and background audio, so give them a high priority in the mix to make sure they’re always audible.
A satisfying sound makes you want to hear it again and again, and that’s just as true for common actions as it is for big moments. Sounds you might hear hundreds of times in a session, such as the bark of an assault rifle or the heavy stomps of a 100-ton ‘mech, should feel awesome every time. Major accomplishments like defeating a boss, winning a race, or leveling up should feel extra special, which you can do with a triumphant sound effect or a special musical stinger to celebrate the occasion.
Rewarding the player only matters if there’s some risk involved, so it’s equally important to use sound to build tension and communicate danger. Use ominous ambiences to make environments sound unsettling, create visceral creature vocals and movements to make enemies feel threatening, and make damage and death feel like a gut punch to motivate the player to stay alive.
Last but not least, a great game should feel like a world you can get lost in, and sound is one of the most effective tools for creating that kind of immersion. Today, most gamers play with full-range headphones at high volumes, so rest assured that no detail will go unnoticed. After focusing on playability and feel, try doing an “immersion pass” by navigating around the game world or simply staying in one place and listening. Do the environments feel like real places, and does the character feel like part of the world?
Background ambience is one of the best ways to make a game world feel alive and help the player suspend their disbelief. Immersive field recordings can transport you to a pristine forest or a barren desert. Walla (indistinct voices and crowd sounds) can make cities and villages feel alive and populated. Spot effects like a trickling stream or a crackling fire can act as sonic reference points to help the player navigate easily. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg — designing ambiences is an art form all its own, and immersive ambiences can be the factor that elevates your game from “fun” to “can’t put it down.”
Any diegetic (in-world) sounds should feel like they’re part of the environment, and that means using a technique called “worldizing.” Depending on the game, worldizing might mean recording gunshots at different distances, assigning different footstep sounds to surfaces like grass and wood, or switching between internal and external vehicle sounds when changing perspectives. Reverb is another excellent tool for worldizing sounds. Implement a big cathedral reverb for an ancient temple or a subtle echo for outdoor spaces, and every sound will instantly feel more grounded in the game world.
